Our Culture & History

At Thompson, our culture is defined by putting customers first. We build lasting relationships through trust, integrity, and responsive support—ensuring every surgeon has the confidence and tools needed for success in the OR.

Thompson Surgical’s story began in 1965 when Dr. Richard C. Thompson patented the world’s first table-mounted retractor, manufacturing it in his garage for surgeons in California. In the 1970s, Dr. Albert W. Farley and his son, Dan, refined the concept to improve surgical exposure. After collaborating with Dr. Thompson, Dan purchased the company in 1983—founding Thompson Surgical Instruments and advancing the innovation that started it all.

With Thompson Retractor, you have more than a tool—you have a trusted partner dedicated to your success in the operating room.
